In 2016 Hope Mohr Dance invited 10 artists to respond to a work by dance pioneer Trisha Brown. I collaborated with dancer and choreographer Peiling Kao for this piece which was performed at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.
As Peiling danced, I slowly unrolled an ink scroll across the stage with my feet. Working with Trisha Brown’s combination of structure and play, the scroll painting was created using six specific gestures and one of three different brushes: a mop found on the street, a brush taped to a long tree branch and a set of rags tied to one foot.
Peiling’s dance responds to Trisha Brown’s “Locus” by delving into the assumed and perceived separations of Eastern and Western dance.
